Piedmont Athens Regional will host its annual ‘In There is Shoes’ 10k race and walk Saturday March 23rd. The event is a fundraiser for the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

Joel Siebentritt, manager of cancer support at Piedmont Athens Regional says many people don’t know about the services provided.

“Some will say it’s one of the best kept secrets, we’ve been providing free services for anyone affected by cancer for over 20 years,” according Siebentritt.

Siebentritt says the 10K is the biggest fundraiser for the facility. So far, nearly 300 people have already registered to run, and organizers are hoping to have 500 by race day. But dozens of volunteers are still needed.

“To have volunteers at every turn and corner, but also to have those enthusiastic voices and bodies out there cheering on our runners and walkers.”

Siebentritt says there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer at various stations along the route.”

“We need folks on the course, we need folks at the UGA Tate Student Center, helping us to set up, to register people on race day, to be attending at food stations along the way.”

The event was started in 2006 as a walk.

Cancer survivors and the families as well as members of the community and avid runners are invited to take part. The race is Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 am. It begins and ends at the Tate student Center. To register or volunteer, visit In Their Shoes Athens.
