The Red Cross is hoping to prevent a summer blood shortage. The agency says while about 38% of the population can donate, only about 10 of those eligible actually do so. The Red Cross is offering people considering becoming first-time donors some tips on how they can have the best donation experience possible.
The agency says you should eat iron-rich foods, get plenty of fluids, and eat eat a healthy meal before the process. Wearing comfortable clothes is recommended. Donors also need to make sure they bring a picture ID, blood donor card, or two other forms of identification.
If you're interested in donating, visit redcrossblood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or use the free blood donor app.
