Two Oconee Teens Among First Female Eagle Scouts

WOAI

This year marks the first time that girls will be able to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Two Oconee County teens are going to be among the first female Eagle Scouts in the country.

Halen DeMattei and Betsy Chapeau will be part of the 2020 class of Scouts achieving this high honor. DeMattei and Chapeau rebuilt the butterfly garden at Oconee County Middle School for their service project.

The pair are accomplishing this just over a year and a half after Boy Scouts changed their name to Scouts BSA and began accepting girls to their program.

Both are just 13 and achieved the title of Eagle Scout in 19 months, much more quickly than is expected.
