UGA Releases Initial Considerations For Return This Fall

Preparing to reopen, the University of Georgia released a statement Tuesday detailing initial considerations for this fall.

In-person classes are scheduled to begin on August 20, 2020 and will end at Thanksgiving break, though campus will remain open for students unable to leave. The final portion of the semester will be completed online, including exams.

In the fall, students can expect classes to be socially distant and taught using hybrid models—lectures may be conducted online and breakout groups in person, for example. The Center for Teaching and Learning is launching a program called Preparing to Pivot, providing resources for faculty to aid in the implementation of hybrid teaching approaches. The college is in the process of reconsidering different spaces and classrooms to abide by social distancing guidelines. Fully online classes are considered a last resort, and faculty and staff can seek such an accommodation through a request process submitted to Human Resources.

The University System of Georgia is not requiring masks to be worn, but UGA is strongly encouraging mask usage. Students, faculty, and staff will be provided with two cloth face coverings. UGA also expects students, faculty, and staff to self monitor for signs of the virus, and will also distribute a thermometer to each individual to do so.

Commencement ceremonies have also been scheduled. The Spring 2020 Undergraduate Commencement ceremony has been scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. in Sanford Stadium. The Spring 2020 Graduate Commencement ceremony for master’s and doctoral degree candidates is scheduled for Friday, December 18, 2020 in Stegeman Coliseum in combination with the regularly scheduled Fall 2020 Graduate Commencement.

Fall 2020 Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement ceremonies are currently scheduled for Friday, December 18 in Stegeman Coliseum.
