Yearly Georgia-Florida Game to Look Different This Weekend

The Brunswick News

The yearly Georgia-Florida game is this weekend, but because of Coronavirus, its gonna look a little different both in Jacksonville and on Saint Simons Island.

Tomorrow in Jacksonville, the No. 5 ranked University of Georgia football team will take on the No.8 ranked University of Florida. The traditional rivalry game will be a little different this year, however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year some 160,000 fans from both schools descended on Jacksonville for the game. In order to curb the potential spread of COVID-19 this year, however, tailgating will be prohibited for fans without a valid ticket. Also, traditional social distancing guidelines like mandatory face coverings and limited fan capacity will be utilized inside of the stadium.

An hour drive north in Glynn County, officials voted unanimously to ban alcohol possession and consumption this weekend. That’s to discourage students from congregating on what is usually dubbed ‘Frat Beach’.

Speaking when the initiative was passed in early October, Glynn County Commissioner Peter Murphy explained the need to encourage appropriate distancing,

“I missed last year unfortunately but was at the two prior ones helping to pick up trash. I can tell you they’re not 6 inches apart from each other, much less six feet. And I don’t think that’s gonna change.”

The game kicks off tomorrow at 3 pm.
