Celebrating nearly 23 years of broadcasts on WUGA, African Perspectives examines current issues in Africa and celebrates African music and culture. The series also focuses on Africans living in Georgia and the Southeast and provides information about African-related activities on the University of Georgia campus. Host Akinloye Ojo is a native of Nigeria and a Ph.D.  in linguistics.

As we celebrate all the fathers and father figures in our listening area, we take some time to address the painful reality of black men and women dying from encounters with the police. The episode features excerpts from a letter signed in 2014 by 1,800 American sociologists for justice and change after the police killing of Trevon Martin in Ferguson, Missouri. The episode rounds up with a commemorative segment in memory of Nigerian reggae legend, Majek Fashek.

This episode is part two of the specials on the genres and impact of music in Africa. In this second show, focus turns to Dr. Adeoluwa’s Okunade’s discussion of instrumentation in African music. The episode also serves to introduce our ever-popular five-week summer musical safari through the African continent. As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans including wonderful instrumentals that featured a wide range of indigenous instruments such as Djembe, kalimba, shekere, kara and so much more.

The two shows focuses on the work ‘Introduction to Music in Africa’ from an African ethnomusicologist, Dr. Adeoluwa Okunade as part of our Summer School sessions on African Perspectives. In addition, the two specialized shows serve as introduction to our ever-popular five-week summer musical safari through the African continent.

As always, the episode features selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans.
