Sunday Afternoons at 4PM

Celebrating 25 years of broadcasts on WUGA, African Perspectives examines current issues in Africa and celebrates African music and culture. The series also focuses on Africans living in Georgia and the Southeast and provides information about African-related activities on the University of Georgia campus. Host Akinloye Ojo is a native of Nigeria and a Ph.D.  in linguistics.

This episode opens the anniversary month of November on African Perspectives. It begins our extended commemorations of twenty-four years of the show on Athens Public Radio station, WUGA. The episode outlines our plans for muted celebrations of the anniversary with music specials and fortnight African music CD giveaways. We will celebrate over the next two months or so by offering some of the music played in the first few months of our show. The focus on this episode was on music from the 1994 collection, Africa Never Stand Still from Ellipsis Arts.

This final episode of the show in October features news updates from across the African continent. Featuring news updates from the ongoing protests against police brutality in Nigeria to the controversies and uneasiness preceding the October 31st presidential elections in Cote D’Ivoire. The show also provides update on the World Trade Organization’s search for its next Director-general, with Nigeria’s Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala amongst the two female finalists.

This third episode of the show in October celebrates one of the pioneers of radio broadcasting in Western Nigeria, Chief Bamiji Ojo as he marks a milestone in his life. We bring back the interview that we had with Chief Ojo (the father of the show’s host) on July 24, 2016 during his visit to the United States. The show also shares five still relevant reminders from Yale Medicine about the coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic. As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans including selected music from P-Square and Awilo Longomba.

This second episode of the show in October features information on the career and music of three African royalties – Wes Madiko of Cameroon; Salif Keita of Mali; and King Sunny Ade of Nigeria. The show provides some information on the career of each of these outstanding and renowned African global stars. This episode also provides information on current virtual programming of the UGA African Studies Institute. As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans including selected music from our three featured artistes.

This first episode in the month of October is a fulfilment of our promise to highlight some of the historical points on the journey to political independence in many parts of Africa. The fourth and final quarter of the year features independence celebrations in nine African countries including Nigeria (October 1), Guinea (October 2), Lesotho (October 4), Uganda (October 9), Equatorial Guinea (October 12), Zambia (October 24), Angola (November 11), Mauritania (November 28), Kenya (December 12), and Libya (December 24).
