Athens News Matters for August 5, 2023

Public school students in Clarke County returned to school this week, and along with the optimism of a new school year, the Clarke County School District faces a number of challenges. Earlier today, WUGA’s Martin Matheny sat down with CCSD Superintendent Robbie Hooker to talk back-to-school, test scores, and more.

At a Legislative Review Committee meeting this week, Athens Clarke-County commissioners discussed community input on a Pet Registration Program that would require dog and cat owners to pay a fee to register their pet and its vaccine status with the county. But, after seeing overwhelmingly negative feedback from the public, the majority of the committee decided not to pursue the measure. District 6 Commissioner Jesse Houle joins Alexia Ridley to discuss that proposal, as well as several of the items from Tuesday's mayor and commission meeting.

Martin Matheny is WUGA's Program Director and a host and producer of our local news program 'Athens News Matters.' He started at WUGA in 2012 as a part-time classical music host and still hosts WUGA's longest-running local program 'Night Music' which is heard on WUGA and GPB Classical. He lives in Normaltown with his wife, Shaye and dog, Murphy.
Alexia Ridley joined WUGA as Television and Radio News Anchor and Reporter in 2013. When WUGA TV concluded operations, she became the primary Reporter for WUGA Radio. Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
