"Tallulah Falls Gorge"

As the weather gets nicer and tourists start going on day trips, Tallulah Falls Gorge is a popular destination, just up the road from Athens, and it’s been that way for more than a century. The museum has a 19th-century painting by George Cooke that shows the gorge as it used to look. Seven tourists stand atop the Devil’s Pulpit, whose name references both the religious spirit and danger evoked by the view. They get a little closer to the edge than most people are allowed these days. If Cooke’s name sounds familiar, that’s because he also painted the huge mural in the UGA Chapel that shows the interior of St. Peter’s in Rome and the famous “View of Athens from Carr’s Hill.”
