Volunteers Launch COVID-19 Resource Map

Volunteers from around the world, including students and alumni from the University of Georgia have combined their efforts to create a global COVID-19 Community Resource Map.

“This includes both permanent and specific COVID-19 response resource.”

That was Rara Reines, UGA alumna with Groundbreakers, the organization that created the map. Groundbreakers is a global network of community leaders operating in 51 countries, with an effort on local, grassroots efforts.

Governor Brian P. Kemp today announced that Georgia reached its lowest number of COVID-19 positive patients hospitalized since hospitals started reporting data to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) on April 8.

Community leaders say an effort to tamp down the spread of COVID-19 is succeeding in northeast Georgia. Gov. Brian Kemp visited Gainesville Friday to highlight the effort. Norma Hernandez of the Northeast Georgia Latino Chamber of Commerce says that over the past two weeks, community leaders have worked to present a message from people that Spanish speakers will trust.

Envision Athens is helping to keep the Athens community connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Project Manager Erin Barger says the situation is particularly difficult for those who are on the margins or struggling financially.

“This pandemic is stressful for everyone, maybe in ways that folks don’t even realize yet,” according to Barger. “The reality is, it is more stressful and more challenging for people who were already underrepresented in terms of prosperity.”

Barger says it is important for residents to be aware of available resources.
