A Georgia prosecutor says she has opened a criminal investigation into “attempts to influence” the outcome of last year’s general election.

Georgia’s secretary of state has announced an audit of signatures on absentee ballot envelopes in one county after receiving a report that officials there may not have properly checked signatures. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said during a news conference that the audit will focus on Cobb County.

Georgia’s 16 Electoral College votes have been cast for Democrat Joe Biden for president. The state’s Democratic electors met in the state Senate chamber on Monday. Led by former candidate for governor Stacey Abrams, the electors each marked a paper ballot that was then collected, counted and confirmed by a voice roll call.

Georgia's state House speaker is proposing to take the selection of the state’s chief election official from voters and put it in the hands of legislators. Republican House Speaker David Ralston said Thursday that he will seek a state constitutional amendment to change how Georgia’s secretary of state is chosen.

Both Democrats and Republicans are trying to find every person whose votes couldn’t be counted in Georgia, where the presidential contest could come down to a few hundred votes out of 5 million cast. Some absentee ballots were missing signatures. Some people did not have an ID at the polls.
