Athens News Matters: Audio Essay -- Athens, 1918

Apr 10, 2020

This isn’t the first time that Athens has dealt with a global pandemic and its economic results. Tommy Valentine, executive director of Historic Athens, brings us this audio essay.

Historic Athens has appointed an Interim Director of the Athens Welcome Center. Michelle Nguyen takes over duties effective Monday as the organization begins the formal process of selecting a new permanent director.

Nguyen has worked in the public sector for 7 years. Most recently, she served as the Director of Economic Development for the Athens-Clarke County government.

The formal posting and job description for the position can be found at workforgood.org.

Think about downtown Athens today – bars, restaurants, shopping. But decades ago, downtown Athens was a much more businesslike place – home to gas stations, car dealerships, even light manufacturing. Much of downtown is considered a historic district, but west of Lumpkin Street, that’s not the case. ACC Commissioner Russell Edwards joins Alexia Ridley to talk about the proposed district.

After 52 years of celebrating and conserving community heritage in Athens, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation is changing its name to Historic Athens.

To honor that change and to expand its mission, the nonprofit is launching its first ever “Historic Athens Porchfest” later this year.  Executive Director Tommy Valentine explains how it works.
