Historic Athens and Mayor Kelly Girtz’s office are partnering together to document the Impact Urban Renewal has had on Athens, as well as to remedy past damage. The Mayor’s Office is funding an internship at the nonprofit so that additional records can be digitized.

Historic Athens held a livecast Tuesday afternoon, in an effort to garner support for saving the Campbell Lane building on the West Broad School site.

Executive Director Tommy Valentine says the site isn’t just historic, by meeting the 50-year standard, it is also significant, meeting three different categories, the first is culturally.

Historic Athens is seeking support for its efforts to get a county-wide preservation master plan for Athens-Clarke County. The move stems from the destruction of the Pottery Town neighborhood. Tommy Valentine is the Executive Director of the organization.

One of the biggest local issues this week is the razing of houses in a historic Athens neighborhood called Potterytown. The outcry over Potterytown has led to calls for a historic preservation master plan, an effort spearheaded by Historic Athens.
