A plan to give Georgia state workers, teachers, and university employees three weeks of paid parental leave has passed the General Assembly. The House voted Monday to agree to changes to House Bill 146 made by the Senate, sending it to Gov. Brian Kemp for his signature or veto.

District 117 Representative Houston Gaines was one of the sponsors.

Georgia’s House speaker is backing a plan that would nearly double pay for lawmakers and also boost pay for all statewide officials except the governor. Base pay for the 180 House members and 56 senators would rise from $16,200 a year to $29,908.

Georgia officials are proposing one-time bonuses of $1,000 to many state employees who make less than $80,000 a year. Gov. Brian Kemp, House Speaker David Ralston and Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, all Republicans, announced the plan Wednesday.

Georgia's state House speaker is proposing to take the selection of the state’s chief election official from voters and put it in the hands of legislators. Republican House Speaker David Ralston said Thursday that he will seek a state constitutional amendment to change how Georgia’s secretary of state is chosen.

Republicans chose David Ralston to return as speaker of the Georgia House for another two years. Incoming GOP members of the House voted for Ralston Monday, setting him up to be elected when the new General Assembly convenes in January.
