St. Mary’s Healthcare in Athens is welcoming its most recent class of medical residents. The 12 residents are beginning the final phase of their medical education this week at the hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. It’s part of a joint effort between the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership and St. Mary’s. Public Relations Manager Mark Ralston says this a major milestone in before going into practice.

“This is the next stage in their medical education, and it’s a big step,” according to Ralston.” The residency is the last thing in their trading before they sit for their boards or decide to go into a specialty or into community practice.”

The residents provide care at St. Mary's and at the program's ambulatory care practice, Community Internal Medicine of Athens.
