Georgia is one of the toughest states when it comes to driving under the influence. Georgia is making a rare appearance in the top five on a recent list by the personal finance website WalletHub. Georgia ranks number two on its 2017 list of strictest and Most Lenient States on DUI. Jill Gonzalez says the Peach State doles out strict punishment for drunk driving.
“In Georgia the minimum jail time after a first conviction is 10 days, typically that’s anywhere from one to three or oftentimes zero days in most other states,” according to Gonzalez. “So right off the bat it sets this tone that it’s serious on DUIs. After your first conviction your license is actually suspended for 360 days, almost a full year. In most states, that’s anywhere from 30 to 90 days.”
Only Arizona was tougher than Georgia. South Dakota, which has no mandatory jail time, was the most lenient.
