President Morehead Highlights His Goals for UGA in Annual State of the University Address

University of Georgia President Jere Morehead gave the annual State of the University Address this afternoon. In it, he announced his goals for UGA in the next year. 

 

President Morehead started off his speech reflecting on all of that had been accomplished in the last year, including UGA’s unprecedented football season.

 

“I stand with the entire Bulldog Nation in expressing my deep sense of pride in everything the team accomplished this year," said Morehead. "Truly it was a magical season." 

 

Last year, President Morehead committed the university to three key tasks: increasing scholarship support, enhancing the learning environment, and solving grand challenges.

 

“We are making education better. We are making the world better. And we should take pride in our progress," he said. 

 

President Morehead unveiled a new program to give grants of up to $2,000 to students who are close to graduating, but face financial hardships.  Additionally, he committed funds to developing a cohort program for students from rural areas that would provide financial and mentorship support.

 

Other highlights including changing the undergraduate curriculum to include both intensive writing and data literacy core classes, as well as designating $1 million dollars towards renovating classrooms into active learning spaces.

 

President Morehead also said that to help cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship, he has a task force working on developing an innovation district at UGA.
