Oconee County has reported its second major sewage spill in less than a month.

On Monday and Tuesday, 72,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was released from the Watkinsville Calls Creek plant, according to Oconee County Observations.

This is the second time sewage has spilled out from the plant in the last month. The previous spill occurred on January 9th with 24,000 gallons of wastewater being released. Both of these spills violated the permit limits for total suspended solids and were classified as major spills.

Oconee County said that it notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the Oconee County Environmental Health Department. Calls Creek is also being monitored and residents have been notified of the spill.

Oconee County said that heavy rainfall seems to be to blame for the spills.
