Today is the first day of summer and UGA Professor of Geography John Knox says the season is likely to stay hot. “Chances are decent that it’s going to be hotter than normal and in terms of precipitation it’s anybody’s guess. We’ve been kind of wet. That’s called a persistence forecast. What’s been happening is probably your best first cut at what will happen,” Knox said.

However, seasonal forecasts for summer can be tricky. “In winter time you’ve got your fronts and your low pressure systems in everything. In summer times it’s often thunderstorms that are not connected to big weather systems, or it might be a tropical weather system that happens to come your way or doesn't,” Knox said. Today is also the longest day of the year. The US Naval Observatory predicts sunset in Athens at 8:48 PM.
