The Clarke County Board of Education delayed the 2020-2021 school year calendar by a month at their July 16 meeting. Savannah Sicurella has the story.

The Clarke County School District will begin its fall term on September 8 after the Board of Education approved the calendar change by an 8-1 vote.

The original August 3 start date received fervent criticism from both parents and educators. The calendar change will provide the district additional time to select virtual teachers and to respond to the impact of University of Georgia students returning in late August.

The delay does not affect the school year’s May 20 end date, Thanksgiving break or winter break, but it will remove 11 instructional days from the schedule.

Teachers are expected to resume their schedules as planned.
