Oconee to Provide County-Wide Broadband Internet Service

WILX

Last week, the Oconee County Board of Commissioners approved a measure to provide broadband internet service across the county.

Partnering with Smart City Capital, the plan will last 20 years and provide broadband internet for residents and businesses.

The project will cost $4.5 million and be paid for through the 2021 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. This is an optional 1% sales tax intended to provide funding for capital projects like this.

County Administrator Justin Kirouac explained the goal of the project at the October 6th meeting.

“The core mission was to figure out how to bring broadband to areas that don’t currently have it. And so this will cure that issue and move towards that.”

The project should take about two-and-a-half years to fully implement across Oconee County.
