The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission unanimously passed the Linnentown Resolution during a special called session.

On Tuesday evening, the commission approved the Linnentown Resolution, which recognizes the destruction of the Black neighborhood to build UGA student housing in the 1960s.

During the meeting, District 2 Commissioner Mariah Parker explained what the resolution will do, and what it lacks.

"In terms of redress it empowers the Justice Memory Committee to make budget recommendations for operational capital projects in areas such as affordable housing, economic development, public transportation, and public art as redress for past harms, and foster future reinvestment in historically underfunded communities," said Parker. "...But it does not provide material redress for the families and for the citizens of Linnentown that were harmed.."

Mayor Girtz said that while Linnentown is the first community destroyed by urban renewal to get a specific resolution, it will not be the last.
