The members of the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents announced former Governor Sonny Perdue as the sole finalist to be the next Chancellor of the state’s higher education system.
Perdue’s road to leadership of the state’s 26 public universities wasn’t always a smooth one. Last May, some regents derailed the process amidst concerns about the former governor and Agriculture Secretary’s fitness for the role. In recent weeks, Governor Brian Kemp has restructured the Board of Regents, replacing some members with new appointees who, some observers say, will be friendlier to naming Perdue as chancellor.
Today’s vote is not the final one, however The Regents will have to vote again later this year to formally appoint him.
