The Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commission will be voting to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana in the county.

The ordinance, which passed out of legislative review in early June, would amend the code of Athens Clarke County in regards to marijuana possession.

While marijuana would still be illegal in Athens, the punishment for possession of less than one ounce would be a $1 fine.

Current Georgia state law cites possession of less than one ounce of marijuana as a misdemeanor, punishable, “by imprisonment for a period not to exceed 12 months or a fine not to exceed $1,000.00, or both”

The next Mayor and Commission Regular Session meeting will be at 6pm on Tuesday, August 2nd.
