Athens-Clarke County leaders will be deciding on several agenda items at this evening’s Mayor and Commission meeting. One item scheduled for consideration is a move to decriminalize marijuana. It’s a move supported by the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement. Mokah-Jasmine Johnson is the co-founder of the organization and a supporter of the proposal. She cites reducing pressure on understaffed jail facilities as one potential benefit, among others.
Critics argue legalizing marijuana could spur drug use, hamper traffic safety and harm public health.
Additional items on the agenda include the adoption of the ACC Clean and Renewable Energy Plan, as well as a resolution to protect reproductive freedom and abortion access in Clarke County. The meeting is 6 o’ clock this evening at City Hall. It will also be available online. You can view the meeting at www.accgov.com, or on the county’s YouTube page.
