Missing Middle Housing Report Sparks Debate

A report on the need for higher-density housing options and a proposed work plan from the county’s Planning Department sparked a larger discussion on Athens-Clarke County’s housing crunch at Tuesday’s meeting of the Mayor and Commission.

District 3 Commissioner Melissa Link says the report details the complicated process of updating the county’s zoning laws to allow new housing ordinances.

Commissioners also discussed changing zoning laws to accommodate accessory dwelling units -- separate structures, like cottages and tiny houses, on the same property as single-family homes.

Commissioners voted to postpone a vote on the Planning Department’s work plan until next month, after voicing concerns over the department’s timeline for an ADU ordinance.
