Members of the Georgia House are readying to select a successor for House Speaker David Ralston.

Current Georgia House Majority Leader Jon Burns (R-Newington) is lining up support to become state House speaker. Several other potential contenders to lead the chamber have bowed out and endorsed Burns.

The official vote won’t come until the new House convenes on Jan. 9. However, House Republicans are scheduled to choose their nominee Monday. That person is likely to win.

Republican Rep. Barry Fleming of Harlem is the only other announced candidate still running. Current Speaker David Ralston is stepping down because of health problems.
