Undocumented women endured invasive and unnecessary treatments at a detention center in South Georgia according to a U.S. Senate subcommittee investigation.

After an 18-month bipartisan investigation by the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI), subcommittee Chairman Senator Jon Ossoff says women detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Irwin County Detention Center were subjected to unneeded treatment at the hands of gynecologist Dr. Mahendra Amin.

The investigation also found that Amin performed an outsized number of invasive procedures compared to other doctors at facilities around the country.

Amin declined to appear at the hearing, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.
