Bolstered by a career high 21 points from sophomore Zoesha Smith, UGA women’s basketball looked past a dismal first quarter to defeat in-state rival Georgia Tech 66 – 52 on Sunday in Atlanta.
Smith, a sophomore from Brunswick, clocked ten rebounds in addition to her 21 points, and was one of four Georgia players to score in double digits. UGA trailed Georgia Tech by 2 points at the end of the first quarter, 14 – 12, before clawing their way to a 29 – 26 lead at the half.
The second half of the game was a different story, with the Bulldogs shooting 56.7 percent, compared to under 35 percent in the first half. Free throw shooting also improved from 29 percent in the first quarter to 75 percent in the final period. Georgia outscored Georgia Tech 37 – 26 in the second half.
UGA heads to the sunny shores of St. Thomas for the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam to face off against Wisconsin on Thursday.
