Athenians are joining the rest of the nation in preparing for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday as well the tradition shopping fest of Black Friday. Jill Gonzalez is an analyst with the personal shopping website WalletHub. She says Americans engaged a record amount of holiday spending last year.

She says when consumers use credit cards, they typically don’t pay off their Christmas debt until after Valentine’s day; and that debt will cost more this year and next.

Analysts estimated holiday budgets for more than 550 cities, and that recommended holiday spending for Athens was $1,100.

There is also a personal holiday budget calculator available at WalletHub.com.
