The state House of Representatives passed a bill Monday aimed at bolstering school safety in Georgia.
The Safe Schools Act which has the strong support of Governor Kemp passed on a 148 to 20 vote. The bill would require schools to conduct an intruder or active shooter drill by October the first each year and would require public schools to submit school safety plans to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency as well as local emergency management and law enforcement agencies.
Though the bill breezed through the house, it drew criticism from some Democratic lawmakers who said that there's no evidence to indicate the bill is going to make schools safer and will create additional burdens for teachers and students.
The bill heads to the Senate.
