May is Mental Health Awareness month and health care experts say the number of students suffering from mental health struggles is rising.
Dr. Coralanne Griffith-Hunte is a human industrial and trauma psychologist, a professional that studies human behavior in various settings. She cites results from the CDC’s recent Youth Behavioral Survey which finds that between 2011-2021, the number of high school students who felt persistently sad or hopeless has increased.
Griffith-Hunte says parents and caregivers need to discuss concerns with children. She recommends resources including the Ad Council’s Sound it Out Campaign and toolkit.
She says the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the issues. For more information, visit sounditouttogether.org.
