The first African American students to integrate Clarke County schools are being honored this weekend. Some 60 years later, the five students Scott Michael Killian, Wilucia Green and her sister Marjorie Green, Agnes Green, (no relation) and Bonnie Hampton will be celebrated by state and local leaders, family and friends, and others.
The students attended two years before the district adopted a “freedom of choice,” policy, to meet civil rights requirements.
The program “Uncommon Valor: The Integration of Clarke County Public Schools in 1963,” is 4 pm Sunday, September 17th in the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall at the CCSD headquarters on Prince Avenue. A reception will follow at the Taylor-Grady House. Both events are free and open to the public. Next story, start with sound from student.
