Sam Kunz was born in Latvia in 1940, just before WWII began.

In this conversation, she tells her daughter Ruta Abolins not only about her experience escaping Latvia and her eventual move to the United States, but she also talks about her own mother and the brave Latvian women who nurtured the displaced children.

StoryCorps Athens stories were recorded locally at the StoryCorps mobile booth at the Athens-Clarke County Library in the fall of 2018. StoryCorps is part of a national initiative to record and preserve the stories of everyday people.
