Georgia set employment records in 2017. That’s according to numbers released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor. Commissioner Mark Butler says last year was a banner year for job creation, employment, and work force gains in the state.

”We set records not only in total amount of jobs that we have here in Georgia, but also set records in our total workforce number, which is the amount of people actively in the workforce and the total number of people employed in Georgia, we set records,” according to Butler. “When you take a look at those three things, setting records this year, that just goes to say basically, 2017, we set the bar when it comes to jobs in Georgia.”

Butler says over the year, Georgia created more than 83,000 new jobs, employed thousands more residents, grew the work force, and drove unemployment down 1.1 percent. He says in 2017 Georgians filed the lowest number of unemployment claims since 1997. He believes 2018 could be comparable.

“Given the current situation that we have right now, things going forward without any kind of negative outside events causing some problems, I think Georgia will continue to do better that the rest of the nation on average.”
