Alberto Brings Heavy Rains, Flooding to Georgia

After making landfall in Florida, the remnants of  former subtropical storm Alberto are posing problems  further inland, causing heavy rain throughout the South.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, the city of Helen, Georgia received seven inches of rain. WAGA-TV reports that the heavy rain resulted in the closing of several roads and flooding to creeks and rivers. The rising water is about knee height.

According to Helen Police, no injuries or structural damage have been reported. Emergency officials are monitoring the water levels.

In Athens, showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Both nights have a 60% chance of precipitation. Forecasters say some storms could include strong winds, frequent lightning and torrential rain.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for north Georgia. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook which includes Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison Oconee and Oglethorpe counties.
