According to state officials, Georgia hit an important milestone with over half of the state's population fully vaccinated, but Athens-Clarke County continues to lag behind the state average.

The state Department of Public Health announced the 50 percent milestone on Monday. Nationally, a little more than 57 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, with the best performing states above 70 percent.

In Athens, however, only 45 percent of residents are fully vaccinated as of October 20.

In total, Athens has seen 165 deaths from the coronavirus since March 2020.
