GBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Athens

Athens-Clarke County police officers shot and killed a man late Friday night, after the man reportedly pointed a gun at officers.

According to media releases from ACCPD and the GBI, which investigates officer-involved shootings in Georgia, three ACCPD officers were investigating a stolen car found in a driveway off Smokey Road. Two of those officers discovered two men in a shed nearby. One of the men, a 42-year-old Athens man, "refused to show the officers his hands and then put a gun to his head," according to the GBI.

The man fired into the ceiling of the shed, then walked towards the officers, pointing the gun at them. The two officers fired on the man, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the ACCPD, the two officers have been placed on leave until an initial review is completed.
