Athens Transit Director, Butch McDuffie, is set to retire April 30th, after serving as director since 2001, with a military leave in 2004.

During his prolific career, McDuffie oversaw projects like the beginning of the Transit’s bus fleet conversion from diesel to hybrid electric, and coordinated free fare on bus transportation for youth, and later, all residents through the end of June 2021.

In 2019, McDuffie was inducted into the Georgia Transit Association’s Hall of Fame. And in 2016, during McDuffie’s tenure, Athens-Clarke County Transit was named the Urban Community Transportation System of the Year.

Assistant Transit Director Pat Hale will act as Interim Transit Department Director until a permanent replacement is appointed to the position.
