The University of Georgia welcomed more than 3,000 new alumni today. Commencement ceremonies were held in Sanford Stadium this morning, for undergraduate students, and earlier this afternoon for graduate students.
In his address to graduates and their friends and families, UGA President Jere Morehead recognized the challenges faced by the UGA community because of the pandemic.
“The past two years have been some of the most difficult in the history for our university, for our nation, and for the world," Morehead said. "But today, we are reminded that anything is possible when we work together.”
Morehead also encouraged graduates to remember their UGA education as they move into their postgraduate lives and careers.
“All of you should be proud of what you have accomplished so far, but know your work is just beginning," Morehead said. "As a UGA alumnus, we do not rest on our laurels nor do we forget our education. While the degree you have earned and the opportunities you have experienced here will certainly help you achieve your personal goals, you are now equipped to become part of something larger than yourselves.”
The undergraduate speaker was Swimming and Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle and for the graduate ceremony, Dr. Michelle Cook, the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Strategic University Initiatives.
