Repairs to College Station Road could be coming sooner than originally thought. That was the optimistic view presented by County Manager Blaine Williams at a meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission earlier this week.
Speaking to Commissioners on Tuesday, Williams said that there was a chance that the project could be finished by July 27, well before the project’s August 12 deadline.
"If the weather cooperates, they could be done as soon as next Wednesday," Williams said..
However, with numerous thunderstorms moving through the area in recent days and more predicted, weather remains a significant question mark when it comes to the early completion of the repairs, which could total up to $460,000, including a bonus of up to $20,000 to the contractor for finishing early.
Another unknown is exactly who was at fault in the June 28 water main break that closed all westbound lanes. When asked by commissioners, Williams demurred, noting that the issue might be the subject of litigation in the future.
