WUGA, the University of Georgia’s award-winning NPR-affiliated radio station, celebrated a big birthday in 2022 — and it’s turning to the community to support the expansion of local news, public affairs, music and cultural programming to better serve listeners across Northeast Georgia.

The station, which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2022, welcomes contributions of any amount, but hopes many listeners will contribute $19.87 each month, commemorating the year WUGA began broadcasting in Athens.

WHY GIVE?

Your contribution to WUGA helps the station expand and deepen its service to the community. The Fund helps provide staff development opportunities through participation in professional conferences and training. Staff members in news, engineering, programming, operations and business disciplines are able to increase their knowledge and expertise in many facets of public broadcasting, thanks to your support of the WUGA 1987 Club. WUGA's community outreach enriches the lives of citizens in this area though special events.  Many events are developed in partnership with non-profit service organizations and other events are focused on visits of national public radio broadcasts to the Athens area.  Programs such as Mountain Stage, eTown, Marketplace, New Letters on the Air and StoryCorps bring their productions to Athens, thanks to your contributions.
Randall Abney, BBA ’68, and former chair of the marketing-finance committee of the 15 member WUGA Community Advisory Council. “Now, more than ever,” Abney said, “Athenians depend on public radio for fair and accurate news as tweets and fake news sites multiply and newspapers cut their staffs. We hope Athenians who love public radio as I do will sustain WUGA by joining the WUGA 1987 Club, pledging $19.87 per month.” WUGA transformed radio news and cultural affairs programming in Athens. The number one goal is to broaden and deepen local news coverage as listeners requested in a recent survey.

WUGA continues to expand program-development relationships with units on the UGA campus, including Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Hodgson School of Music, Terry College, the College of Public Health, SPIA and others. These partnerships yield student-produced content for WUGA's news magazine program, Athens News Matters and other local journalism focused on health, sports and research. Contributions to the 1987 Club will allow WUGA to create more programs with UGA units which can enhance the quality of life in the community.

To join the WUGA 1987 Club, set a contribution of $19.87 and on the "Donation Information ” page, choose on Recurring Gift and select a Monthly installment frequency.
