Much of State Under a High Fire Danger Warning

Much of Georgia is under a high fire danger warning. The warm, dry, windy weather combined with low humidity have created what the Georgia Forestry Commission considers treacherous conditions.

Wendy Burnett with the GFC says conditions lead to a Red Flag warning for north and central Georgia this weekend with the number of wildfires well above average the last week.

"The Georgia forestry commission responded to four hundred and ninety wildfires across the state and those fires burned right at sixty-two hundred acres."

There are no current bans for controlled burns but burn permits will not be issued on Red Flag Warning Days.

Showers and thunderstorms tonight and into Wednesday morning could bring some relief to the dry conditions fueling the fires.

Some thunderstorms may become strong to severe, capable of producing isolated damaging wind gusts and perhaps a tornado or two. Another round of rain is expected this weekend.
