Local Middle Schoolers Use Georgia Museum of Art for Summer Break

Local students participating in Camp Dive visit the Georgia Museum of Art every Tuesday as a way to make make connections between visual art and creating their own literature.

Camp Dive is a local program focused on engaging and enriching summer experience for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, while also giving UGA students the opportunity to get hands-on experience working with children and youth from the Athens community. The camp is partnered with the Clarke County School District, The UGA College of Education and the Athens Clarke County community.

In an attempt to combat summer slide, the tendency for students to lose progress made during the previous school year, Camp Dive has partnered with the Georgia Museum of Art to encourage students to not only learn about art and poetry, but to create it as well.

"We hope that the middle school students are inspired by the works of art and make connections to their lives through art making and poetry," said Carissa DiCindio, the museum's curator of education. "We want them to feel at home in the museum."

The idea behind this partnership is that students will create poetry, performance and visual art that reflects their community and investigates connections among these art forms. The campers will present and display their work at the museum on June 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at a reception that is free and open to the public.
