The University of Georgia will open Sanford Stadium to the public to view the total eclipse of the sun on August 21. According to a tweet advertising the event by the UGA Department of Geography, the first 5,000 guests to arrive at the stadium will receive free custom viewing glasses. Guests can also look forward to concessions, giveaways, and views from around the world on the jumbo screen. The stadium will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. with peak darkness arriving at 2:38 p.m. Although Athens is not in the path of total darkness, the UGA Department of Geography believes that UGA is in a great position to view 99.1 percent of the blackout. This viewing event is being planned by the UGA Department of Geography, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the UGA atmospheric sciences programs and faculty in the College of Education for entertainment as well as a learning.
