Shifa Clinic Athens to Hold Open House

A new free clinic is Athens is opening its doors to the public tomorrow. Shifa-Clinic is the most recent facility in Athens to offer free medical care to those that are under- or uninsured.  It was started by five UGA pre-med students in March. Clinic Manger Abdus Subhan helped to start the clinic. He says Shifa Athens is holding an open house to let members of the community know another source of care is available.

"We have doctors come in every week who are volunteering their time to help out, as well as we have 10 students a week,” according to Subhan. “Athens is a poor city and it needs the service. Even with Mercy and Athens Nurses Clinic and these other clinics, we’re not serving the total indigent population.”

Shifa is a part of the Islamic Center of North America, or ICNA Relief USA. The clinic is located at 1 Huntington Road. The open house is Saturday from 10:30 am to 2 pm. It is free and open to the public. Regular hours are Saturday’s 11 to 2 pm. For more information, 706-850-4588.
