A new statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was unveiled this morning at the Atlanta state capitol grounds. Today is the 54th anniversary of King’s “I have a dream” speech during the civil rights March on Washington. Rev. Bernice King, one of King’s daughters, said she believes the statue will give hope to the country during a tumultuous time.
Gov. Nathan Deal, Georgia political leaders and other members of King’s family were present for the statue’s unveiling. The statue was proposed and approved more than three years ago by Georgia lawmakers.
King was a native Atlantan who was born in the city in 1929.
