Lord Announces Intent to Run for District 119 Seat

Monday’s appointment of Chuck Williams as the new director of the Georgia Forestry Commission by Governor Nathan Deal means a special election will be held in November to fill his seat, as well as that vacated by Representative Regina Quick. Quick was appointed to replace Judge David Sweat on the Western Judicial Circuit.

Local funeral home director Tom Lord is the first person to announce his intentions to run for Williams’ District 119 seat. That house district covers part of Clarke and Oconee counties. The owner of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home with locations in Oconee, Clarke and Madison counties, Lord has served three terms as coroner of Athens-Clarke County from the 1980s into the early 1990s.

Several candidates have announced their intentions to run for Quick’s District 117 seat. They include Houston Gaines and attorneys Deborah Gonzalez and Doug McKillip. Gonzalez is running as a Democrat, while Gaines and McKillip are running as Republicans.
