Georgia is one of the most diverse states in the nation, that’s according to the personal finance website WalletHub. The company complied its list of 2017’s Most and Least Diverse States in America and the Peach State ranked 13th on the list. Analyst Jill Gonzalez says they looked at diversity in a variety of ways including cultural and ethnic, socioeconomic, household, and religious.

“We tend to think of racial and ethnic diversity the most, but there’s income diversity, educational attainment, linguistic, birthplace industry, all of these different things,” Gonzalez said. “Georgia really ranked highly in some many of them, two come to mind here. It’s actually in the top five for industry diversity.”

Gonzalez says the varied types of industry can result in economy stability.

“We’re really seeing it’s one of the most diversified in terms of industry. That’s not only good for the people that are working there, but also looking forward to future economic strife over the country, the most economically and industrially diverse states tend to do the most.”

She says Georgia also did very well when it comes to racial and ethnic diversity. Analysts did find disparities in income and education levels.

“Do we want as many people without a high school diploma as those with a bachelor’s degree? That would be considered more diverse but it that necessarily a good thing.”

California was the most diverse state and West Virginia was the least.
