October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the American Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to give blood to support cancer patients and others. Kristen Stancil is Communications Manager with the organization. She says most people don’t think about the need for blood in treating cancer patients.
“A lot of people may not realize that someone who is being treated for cancer whether it’s during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications, they actually may need blood,” according to Stancil. “It’s important to help make sure that those patients as well as others have the blood that they need for their treatment.”
Stancil says each donation can help in more than one patient.
“One donation could help save up to three lives, so whether it is someone who is being treated for breast cancer, it could be someone who has sickle cell disease and maybe needs a frequent blood transfusion, it could be someone who is in a car accident, someone who is needing blood, a mother after giving birth. There really are a lot of reasons for the use of blood and it can only come from generous volunteers.”
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.7 million new cases of cancer are expected in the U.S. this year.
