A same-sex couple was beaten up in downtown Athens over the weekend.
The same-sex couple was holding hands and crossing the street near College Avenue when three other men followed them. Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, said the two men were harassed, called names and then attacked. Rodriguez said it was clear they were attacked because they were a homosexual couple.
The couple was from Walton County and Fort Benning. The men who attacked them were in Athens for the Georgia-South Carolina football game. The victims in the attack were treated at the scene and decided not to press charges.
The three attackers were from Marietta and Fort Benning.
